Reynolds Set to Test-Market 'Camel Snus' May 1, 2006
News Summary
'Camel Snus' will be the first smokeless-tobacco product to be rolled out by a major U.S. tobacco company, the Financial Times reported April 27.
Reynolds American will test-market the product this summer; the announcement comes on the heels of the company's purchase of smokeless-tobacco company Conwood. Camel Snus will be sold as a pouch of finely ground and pasteurized tobacco intended to be placed between the lip and gum.
Snus, a close relative of snuff, doesn't cause the urge to spit common with most smokeless tobacco, but still carries the same cancer risks.
Snus is popular in Scandinavia, and U.S. tobacco firms hope that its "spitless" properties will make it a popular alternative to smoking in the face of indoor-smoking bans. UST, the nation's largest smokeless-tobacco firm, is also test-marketing snus: Revel Tobacco Packs in the U.S. and Access in Canada.
