News Summary

Showtime is promoting its series "Weeds" -- about a suburban mom who supports her family by dealing marijuana -- with a "Munchie Mobile" that is touring U.S. cities handing out free brownies, T-shirts, and DVDs, and an ad for the series in Rolling Stone was scented to smell like marijuana, the Boston Herald reported Aug. 12.

The U.S. Office of National Drug Control Policy was not amused. "There are more teens in treatment for marijuana than for alcohol dependence," said spokesperson Tom Riley. "Is that funny?"

Stuart Zakim, a spokesperson for Showtime, said the campaign is intended to "help us break through the clutter, fully appreciating what the show is about."

re: Tom Riley Ask those teens why they are there for marijuana. I bet you'll find a LARGE majority were given a choice of a criminal record or a treatment program. Most either chose treatment or a parent chose for them with threats of homelessness or worse, to be sure. Either way you look at it , it is not funny.
