News Summary

Actor Mel Gibson was sentenced to probation and ordered to attend alcohol treatment for a year after pleading no-contest to a drunk-driving charge, the New York Times reported Aug. 17.

Gibson, whose July 28 DUI arrest garnered national attention after he spewed anti-Semitic remarks at police, received a $1,300 fine. Gibson did not appear in court.

The judge in the case ordered Gibson to attend a 12-step program five times weekly for the next 4-1/2 months and then three times weekly through the end of the year. The actor has issued a pair of apologies for his actions on the night of his arrest and has offered to make public-service ads warning against drinking and driving.
