News Summary

Following the lead of Switzerland and the city of Vancouver, Portugal's government said it will establish community-based centers where drug addicts can safely inject drugs under medical supervision, Medical News Today reported Aug. 30.

Portuguese prisons also will establish needle-exchange programs to prevent the spread of HIV among prisoners, and methadone programs will be expanded.

In 2000, Portugal decriminalized drug use. The new initiatives are part of a plan intended to cut drug use and diminish their related social and health effects.
