Okla. Senate Approves Fines, Penalties for Underage Drinking April 13, 2006
News Summary
Oklahoma youths caught illegally trying to buy alcohol would face hefty fines and community service under a bill passed 45-1 by the state Senate, the Associated Press reported April 12.
The Prevention of Youth from Access to Alcohol Act calls for fines of up to $900 and license suspensions of up to two years for minors caught trying to buy alcohol. Retailers caught selling alcohol to minors could face up to five years in prison and $5,000 in fines for repeat offenses, as well as suspension of their business licenses.
Minors also will be banned from bars, even if they are part of restaurants, and the bill criminalizes sales of 3.2-percent beer to youths under age 21.
The measure now goes to Gov. Brad Henry for approval. The Governor's Task Force on Prevention of Underage Drinking has endorsed the bill.
