News Summary

North Carolina's Alcohol Beverage Control Commission won't allow alcohol retailers to offer discounts to frequent buyers or issue coupons for alcohol purchases, the Associated Press reported Nov. 10.

North Carolina First Lady Mary Easley, national co-chair of the group Leadership to Keep Children Alcohol-Free, criticized the proposal, calling it irresponsible and dangerous. The commission rejected to plan on a 2-1 vote, although they hinted that a revised proposal that only included coupons for wine might get a more favorable hearing.

Alcohol retailers previously failed to get the plan through the state legislature.
