News Summary

The New York State Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services (OASAS) has revoked the licenses of nine addiction-treatment programs on Long Island and hit their owner with a $6.9-million fine, Newsday reported Jan. 25.

The agency cited 174 violations of state law in announcing the decision against Crossings Recovery Systems, Inc., of Patchogue and owner Frank Buonanotte. Four sober homes operated by Crossings also were ordered shut by the state. Among the charges were failing to conduct proper needs assessments or develop adequate treatment plans.

Some former Crossroads sober-home residents applauded the state's moves, saying they had not been fed properly, were abused verbally, and were forced to work for low wages.
