Nevada Legalization Campaign Largely Funded by Outsiders October 27, 2006
News Summary
The Marijuana Policy Project (MPP), a national drug-reform group, has provided 98 percent of the funding for the Committee to Regulate and Control Marijuana (CRCM), the main advocate for legalizing personal marijuana possession in Nevada.
The Las Vegas Review-Journal reported Oct. 23 that MPP provided all but $16,000 of the $900,000 spent by CRCM in support of Question 7, a ballot item that would make it legal for Nevada residents to possess up to an ounce of marijuana for personal use.
CRCM campaign manager Neal Levine said that MPP "didn't just put a blindfold on and throw a dart and say we are going to work in Nevada. We are on the ballot because 86,000 Nevadans signed our petition in five weeks."
But Todd Raybuck, a Las Vegas police officer who opposes Question 7, accuses MPP of using Nevada as a "launching pad to legalize marijuana throughout the country."
