Mass. Moves to Ban Cigarette Giveaways June 23, 2006
News Summary
Tobacco companies would be prohibited from giving away free cigarettes in Massachusetts under a bill that has received preliminary approval in the state House, the Boston Globe reported June 14.
Supporters of the measure say that giveaways tempt young smokers. "This particular giveaway gives you more than you bargained for," said Rep. Anthony J. Verga (D-Gloucester). But Rep. George Peterson (R-Grafton) chided fellow lawmakers, saying that if eliminating tobacco-related illnesses is the goal then all tobacco products should be outlawed -- even if that means losing billions in tobacco-settlement money. "Why aren't we willing to say enough is enough?" he said.
The House approved the bill on a voice vote, and also indicated support for another measure that would require tobacco companies to only sell 'fire-safe' cigarettes in Massachusetts.
