News Summary

Reps. Patrick Kennedy (D-R.I.) and Jim Ramstad (R-Minn.), whose addiction-forged friendship was profiled this week in the New York Times, used the spotlight to call for passage of a bill that would mandate equal insurance coverage for alcohol and other drug disorders.

Reuters reported Sept. 21 that Kennedy and Ramstad held a press conference alongside other people in recovery to make a plea for treating addiction on par with other medical conditions.

Congress is currently considering a bill that would require parity coverage of mental-health disorders, and the lawmakers want addiction added to that. The mental-health parity bill has considerable bipartisan support, but GOP leaders in Congress have not brought it up for a vote.
