News Summary

More kids are "huffing" household chemicals to get high, and fewer understand the risks of their behavior, according to a new report from the Partnership for a Drug-Free America (PDFA).

Reuters reported April 24 that the PDFA study found that about 20 percent of teens admit to huffing, which had declined from 23 percent in 1995 to 18 percent in 2001.

Moreover, the percentage of youths who strongly agree that huffing can be fatal has declined 19 percent from 2001.

Steve Pasierb, PDFA's president and CEO, blamed the trend on a lack of education. The Partnership led a national ad campaign against huffing back in the 1990s that coincided with the decline of huffing and an increase in knowledge of the dangers associated with the practice. Pasierb said that PDFA was restarting the campaign.

The group's latest survey also found that only 5 percent of parents believed that their child had ever used inhalants.
