News Summary

The Smoke-Free Hawaii Law, which went into effect last week, bans smoking in all public places and is considered one of the toughest antismoking laws in the U.S., the Associated Press reported Nov. 19.

The law not only bans smoking in bars, restaurants and other public spaces but also within 20 feet of doorways and windows. Some worry that the law will hurt tourism, especially among heavy-smoking Japanese visitors, and the state is working with travel experts to educate Japanese tourists about the new law.

The law is being marketed as a clean-environment measure as well as a public-health initiative.

Businesses face fines of up to $100 for a first offense for failing to comply with the law; individuals can be hit with $50 fines for lighting up indoors.
