News Summary

"I think the president ought to fire the drug czar," Sen. Charles Grassley (R-Iowa), chairman of the Senate Caucus on International Narcotics Control, told reporters this week.

The Des Moines Register reported April 26 that Grassley called for the firing of White House Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP) director John Walters during a hearing on the impact of methamphetamine on the child-welfare system. Grassley has been critical of Walters for his handling of the methamphetamine issue, as well as the drug czar's involvement in funding issues related to the federal Drug Free Communities program.

Grassley said his calls for more ONDCP action on meth have been met with "basically, bureaucratic mumbo-jumbo." A spokesperson for the agency declined comment.
