News Summary

The National Consumers League says that alcohol bottles should contain nutritional information similar to that on food products and medications, CBS reported Feb. 26.

"You have nutritional information on water bottles, but not on wine and beer and alcohol," pointed out shopper Trish Newhall. Linda Golodner, president of the National Consumers League, said 90 percent of Americans would like to see more information on alcohol packages.

"We have nutrition facts on food. We have facts of over-the-counter drugs -- drug facts on over-the-counter labels -- and we think it's time that alcoholic beverages also had an alcoholic facts label," she said.

The U.S. Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau accepted public comments on ingredient labels for alcoholic beverages. "You will see very shortly a temporary rule will be going out requiring the disclosure of allergens on alcoholic beverages," said agency head John Manfreda.

The rulemaking process could take a year, but "we think that alcoholic beverage companies should voluntarily put that information on now," Golodner said.
