Bloomberg is Butt of Play's Jokes August 25, 2006
News Summary
A new off-Broadway play parodies the city's tough smoking laws and casts Mayor Michael Bloomberg as a villain, the New York Sun reported Aug. 22.
The play, Smoking Bloomberg, is set to open next month at the New York Musical Theatre Festival; the musical satire depicts the owner of a Korean dry cleaner bent on revenge against Bloomberg because fewer customers are bringing in smoky clothing.
But the play also has a serious side, said writer David Cornue. "It's a platform for a more universal, fundamental, American-based issues about personal freedoms, personal rights, and where do you draw the line," he said. Cornue said he and the other writers love the smoking ban and the mayor, but added: "We're just not sure that the smoking ban is completely constitutional."
Bloomberg has been invited to attend the play, but a spokesperson indicated that his attendance is doubtful.
Six performances of the play will be held between Sept. 13 and Sept. 16.
