Athletes Need to Speak Out on Steroids, Lawmaker Says September 7, 2006
News Summary
Rep. Tom Davis (R-Va.), who led the 2005 legislative fight to get Major League Baseball to crack down on steroid use, says sports stars need to do more to prevent young people from using drugs to increase athletic performance, Reuters reported Aug. 30.
Davis said prominent athletes need to take the anti-steroids message to local communities. "I find it hard to believe that the leagues and players associations cannot identify professional athletes who would be willing to take time out of their schedules to discuss such an important topic with their young fans," said Davis, chair of the House Government Reform Committee. "They are the best messengers."
A task force formed by Davis with participation from major U.S. sports leagues, called the Zero Tolerance Roundtable, released a set of recommendations on addressing steroid use, including education in elementary schools, public-service announcements, and more research on drug testing of athletes. Also proposed was a per-ticket surcharge to help fund steroid education.
