Alcohol Ads Target Georgia College Students August 21, 2006
News Summary
Some bars around the University of Georgia in Athens are handing out coupons to students shopping at college bookstores, prompting protests from parents and educators, the Associated Press reported Aug. 21.
The coupon books include $1 drink specials and free nachos when students buy a pitcher of beer, as well as an ad for a bail bondsman. The coupons were handed out with textbook purchases. "I was disturbed," said Rebecca Williams, whose daughter is a UGA sophomore and not yet legally able to drink. "I was driving to work today, and I just got more and more furious."
"This makes it even more of a challenge to change the perception that all there is to do in Athens is to drink," added Pat Daugherty, UGA's assistant vice president for student services, who heads the school's Campus/Community Alcohol Coalition.
The owner of Off Campus Bookstore and East Campus Bookstore said he told promoters that no alcohol ads should be included in the booklets, but said he was bound by the contract he signed to let the coupons be distributed. "Next year, if we do it, I guarantee they won't have them in there," said owner Charles Fuller.
