News Summary

Convicted drunk drivers in Wyoming could face mandatory addiction assessments and treatment referrals under a bill passed by the state Senate, the Associated Press reported Feb. 15.

First-time DUI offenders would be required to undergo a substance-abuse evaluation. "The only way to deal with substance abuse is through treatment," said state Sen. Mike Massie (D-Laramie). "The only way to find out if they have a substance-abuse problem is to do an assessment."

Sen. John Schiffer (R-Kaycee) noted that the measure would require rural DUI offenders to drive with suspended licenses to get to their evaluation appointments. But Massie said judges could waive the suspension in such cases.
