News Summary

After the San Francisco Department of Public Health processes and verifies an application for a State Medical Marijuana ID card, it will return all medical records and documentation to protect the individual's privacy, the Drug Policy Alliance reported Dec. 21.

Originally, the ID program was doubted as a practical solution to the arrests or confiscations which medical marijuana patients faced, because local health departments would have had to retain all patient records, endangering their privacy by making the documents subject to federal seizure or subpoena.

The solution, proposed by San Francisco Supervisor Ross Mirkarimi, was to return patients' documents to them once the application process was complete.

San Francisco will begin issuing the ID cards on January 9, 2006.
