Oregon Parity Measure Becomes Law

Insurers in Oregon will be required to cover addiction and mental illness on par with other diseases under legislation signed into law last week, The Oregonian reported Aug. 17.

"Today marks the day when we officially end discrimination in health benefits between mental and physical health problems," said Gov. Ted Kulongoski as he signed the bill. The measure goes into effect on Jan. 1, 2007.

Details of which specific mental conditions are covered under the law still need to be worked out. However, the measure does specifically require parity coverage for addictive disorders.
