News Summary

Taking driver's licenses away from underage drinkers and cracking down on adults who provide alcohol to youth are among the options being considered by Oregon Gov. Ted Kulongoski, who wants to cut down on drinking by high-school and college students.

The Associated Press reported Oct. 12 that Kulongoski called underage drinking "a state crisis" after meeting with the Oregon Partnership, an alcohol and other drug prevention group. The recent alcohol overdose death of a student at Oregon State University has helped galvanize attention on the issue.

"Last month's tragic death of 18-year-old Lance Strickland should have been a wake-up call to all of us on this issue," said Kulongoski, who has asked the state attorney general to create a task force on underage drinking sanctions.
