News Summary

The Nevada legislature has declined to act on a petition to legalize marijuana use in the state, meaning the issue will be up to voters to decide in the 2006 ballot, the Reno Gazette-Journal reported March 10.

The petition, certified last fall, was tabled by the Nevada Assembly Judiciary Committee, meaning that under state law the question will now go to voters. The committee took testimony on both sides of the issue before deciding to defer action.

Jack Cole, a retired police officer who heads Law Enforcement Against Prohibition, called current drug laws "the very essence of a failed public policy.

"We need to correct some of these horrors we’ve created," he said.

But Clark County Sheriff Bill Young countered, "Sending the message to our young people that the legalization of marijuana is the correct way we want them to lead their lives is totally irresponsible. We would be the laughing stock of the country. This thing makes no sense. It has no logical basis in fact and is simply the wrong thing for our citizenry."
