News Summary

Montana Gov. Brian Schweitzer is poised to sign a bill limiting sales of drugs containing pseudoephedrine to licensed pharmacies and requiring that such drugs be kept behind pharmacy counters, the Great Falls Tribune reported April 20.

HB-287 also requires customers to show ID before purchasing cold medicines, like Sudafed, that contain pseudoephedrine, which can be used to make illegal methamphetamine. Buyers would be limited to 300 tablets per month.

Attorney General Mike McGrath said the bill would have an impact on clandestine meth labs in Montana. In deference to rural Montanans, the measure contains an exception allowing drug sales in retail stores in those counties lacking pharmacies.

The bill would take effect on July 1, 2005.
