News Summary

Former drug czar Barry McCaffrey urged state lawmakers in Pennsylvania to support an $8-million increase in funding for treatment and prevention programs, the Harrisburg Patriot-News reported June 16.

Acting on behalf of the local addiction community, McCaffrey met with leading lawmakers and Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell and asked them to support the increase in the budget for the state Department of Health's Bureau of Drug and Alcohol Programs. Rendell has been calling for a $2.9-million cut in addiction-treatment services.

McCaffrey said that treatment funding was essential because every untreated addict has the potential to become a "one-person crime wave." Just 86,908 of the estimated 630,000 Pennsylvania residents who needed treatment last year got services, state officials said.
