Mass. to Open Recovery High School October 17, 2005
News Summary
South Boston will be home to the first Recovery High school in the state of Massachusetts, the Boston Globe reported Oct. 7.The school will be attended by 30-50 students, each of whom will have to complete treatment and pledge to stay sober in order to enroll. A similar school may be opened in Springfield next fall, and others could follow. The state provided $800,000 to support the Boston and Springfield schools.
"If you put a child back in an environment where drugs are available, that child has no chance to stay in school," said Mass. Lieutenant Governor Kerry Healey, who proposed the recovery schools. "It's an indictment of the current environment in our schools. On the other hand, this is a constructive step toward providing a drug-free environment for kids who can't afford to be around drugs."
There are approximately 25 such schools nationally.
