News Summary

Dutch lawmakers are proposing to allow marijuana to be legally cultivated under a regulatory scheme similar to one used for tobacco growing, the Associated Press reported Dec. 3.

The plan has the support of a wide range of political parties; supporters say allowing Dutch farmers to grow the drug will give marijuana "coffee shops" a legal place to purchase their supplies. Mayors of Dutch border cities also back the plan, saying it will cut down on cross-border smuggling.

Opponents, however, worry that allowing legal cultivation will eventually lead to outright marijuana legalization in the Netherlands.

The proposal also calls for coffee shops to provide health information to marijuana buyers, similar to health warnings now required for tobacco sales.
