IN: Girl Killed to Protect Meth Lab February 8, 2005
News Summary
Police believe a 10-year-old girl in tiny Crothersville, Ind., was murdered after stumbling across a clandestine methamphetamine lab, the Associated Press reported Feb. 7.The body of fourth-grader Katlyn Collman was found in a local creek after she was apparently abducted and killed in order to prevent her from talking about a meth lab in an apartment near her home. "If Katie hadn't been walking by a meth lab, she would be alive today," said the Rev. Jon Pierce at a funeral service for Collman. He urged local residents to form neighborhood watches to prevent future crimes.
Members of Collman's family want to build a playground on the site of the meth lab being linked to her murder.
A 20-year-old man, Charles James Hickman, was charged with Collman's murder. Police said he tied the girl's hands behind her back after abducting her; Hickman told officials Collman ran away and fell into the creek, but also said he may have "bumped" her into the water.
Collman's killing was the first murder in Crothersville in 25 years.
