Research Summary

A game that allows players to run a marijuana cultivation operation has been barred from the flagship New York Toy Fair, the Associated Press reported Feb. 16.

Toy Industry Association officials said the Grow-Op Game sent the wrong message to children. The game involves players trying to grow potent pot in British Columbia while fending off nosy neighbors, police raids, and more mundane hazards like power blackouts, floods, and insect attacks.

Officials with Bored Games Corp. of Vancouver, which designed the game, found the decision to ban the game surprising. "There's a lot of other games out there touting everything from guns to war and violence," said company spokesperson Ivan Solomon. "We see this game as a sort of education: If you're thinking about starting a grow operation, it's not going to be easy."

The game was designed by a former marijuana cultivator from Canada while serving time in jail.
