News Summary

An innovative Missouri court for 'deadbeat dads' is playing a key role in getting participants into addiction treatment, as well as compelling fathers to take responsibility for their children, the Kansas City Star reported Jan. 11.

The Jackson County program, launched in 1998, currently has 135 participants and has collected more than $1 million in child-support payments since its inception. A crew of community and social-service volunteers works to get court participants into drug treatment, job training, and parenting classes.

Fifty-two men have graduated from the program; involvement can range from six months to several years. Those who drop out face probation or jail.
