News Summary

Former University of Nebraska football coach Rep. Tom Osborne (R-Neb.) is introducing a resolution in Congress asking the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) to ban alcohol ads on TV and radio broadcasts of college sporting events, the New York Times reported March 9.

Osborne introduced the resolution on the eve of the NCAA's men's basketball tournament, the biggest college sports event of the year. The Nebraska lawmaker had introduced an identical measure last year, but it never came to a vote.

The resolution said that alcohol advertising on college sports broadcasts totaled $52 million in 2003, with $21 million spent on the men's basketball tournament alone. Osborne is a board member of the Campaign for Alcohol-Free Sports TV, which says that 227 NCAA member schools have agreed to ban alcohol ads.
