News Summary

A class-action lawsuit against Philip Morris, which alleges that the company hid the health risks of "light" cigarettes, has been approved by the Missouri Court of Appeals, the Kansas City Star reported Aug. 17.

The appeals court upheld a lower-court ruling in favor of the class-action suit, filed on behalf of Missouri smokers. The case before the court argues that Philip Morris intentionally misled smokers to think that light cigarettes were safer than regular cigarettes.

Attorneys for the cigarette company said they would appeal the ruling to the Missouri Supreme Court.

In a similar class action in Illinois, a county judge awarded $5 billion in 2003; that case is still under appeal.
