Calif. Agents Seize $4.5 Billion Worth of Marijuana

News Summary

State narcotics agents in California doubled their seizures of marijuana compared to last year, gathering up more than a million plants worth an estimated $4.5 billion on the street.

The Contra Costa Times reported Nov. 12 that the U.S. Justice Department reported that the most plants were seized in Shasta County, followed by Lake, Tulare, and Fresno counties. About three-quarters of the seized marijuana was taken from public lands.

"Our achievements are dampened by the sober reality that armed criminal growers are more willing than ever to use public lands and put outdoor enthusiasts at risk and damage California's environment," said Attorney General Bill Lockyer.

The growth in the local marijuana crop is tied to the border crackdown that took place after Sept. 11, 2001; law-enforcement officials said they have gotten better at spotting marijuana gardens, but also note that more marijuana is being grown, particularly by Mexican drug cartels.

Wow. The fact that $4.5 billion dollars worth of marijuana alone were seized in one state speaks to the size of the business of selling drugs in our nation. Congratulations to the law enforcement in California for all of their great work. However, I have to echo the statement made by Attorney General Bill Lockyer that this proves to be a scary reality. How do we know how big of a chunk of the marijuana industry the narcs were able to disrupt in California? With that much herb on the streets it is impossible to know for sure. I understand that local growth of marijuana has exploded since 9/11 due to the tightening of border patrol. All that means is that law enforcement across the nation has to crack down on the production of all illegal drugs (not just marijuana). We should be reading stories like this happening in states all across the union. In my experience illegal drugs have not lead to anything positive, and I would like to see this trend of cracking down continue.
