Ariz. Designated Driver Program Takes the Car, Too

News Summary

Overindulgent drinkers in Phoenix, Ariz., can get themselves and their car home safely for $25 and a call to Desi the Designated Driver, the Arizona State Web Devil reported March 10.

More than a safe-ride service, Desi uses a flatbed truck to carry the drinker's car home. "The more you drink, the better we look," says Greg Murray, Desi's owner. Murray said he came up with the idea after a night of partying, when he realized that he not only would have to pay for a cab ride home but also another one to retrieve his car in the morning.

"I can't drive. I can't afford to get a DUI," he recalled thinking. "There needs to be something where you can take your car home with you."

Launched last year, Desi is sponsored by Anheuser-Busch as a pilot program. The brewer subsidizes the cost of Desi's pickups. Actual costs would be higher, but not as high as the $250-$2,500 and other penalties associated with getting a DUI.

"I don't want to be real dramatic like I'm trying to save the world," Murray said. "I'm not in it for the money, honestly. I just want this concept to work. The business is about safety, first and foremost."
