News Summary

Starting this month, a federally funded electronic voucher project in Louisiana will allow eligible mothers and adolescents to select which state-licensed addiction treatment program to participate in, the Associated Press reported on Feb. 16.

The three-year, $22.8 million Access to Recovery grant making the program possible will provide a range of treatment services to approximately 8,700 participants, estimates Michael Duffy, assistant secretary of the Louisiana Office for Addictive Disorders. At present, only 8 percent of adults and 4.5 percent of adolescents receive the treatment they need.

Over 300 treatment providers have registered their participation in the project with the electronic system, which was created by Unisys Corp. Eligibility for treatment vouchers, is based on income and open only to those pregnant women, mothers, and adolescents with addictive disorders.
