News Summary

A pharmaceutical company has purchased the rights to Remoxy, a version of the controversial painkiller OxyContin designed to thwart abuse of the drug, the New York Times reported Nov. 10.

Biotechnology firm Pain Therapeutics could reap up to $300 million from the deal with King Pharmaceuticals, which will attempt to take Remoxy to market by 2007. Both Remoxy and OxyContin are designed as slow-release drugs, but Remoxy encases its narcotic active ingredients in a sticky substance that makes it difficult to crush, snort, inject, or dissolve in alcohol.

Final-stage clinical trials of the drug are scheduled for January 2006.
