News Summary

Attorney General Mike Beebe has approved the wording of the "Arkansas Medical Marijuana Act" ballot initiative, allowing the measure to enter the signature-gathering phase, the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette reported March 13.

For the past four months, Beebe had rejected proposed wording, saying it was ambiguous.

"I'm thrilled. It's been a struggle to get the wording right," said Denele Campbell, executive director of the Arkansas Alliance for Medical Marijuana.

In order for the measure to be placed on the Nov. 2 election ballot, the Arkansas Alliance for Medical Marijuana needs to collect 64,456 signatures of registered Arkansas voters by July 2.

"We've been working hard the last five years, and we feel like we can get it done," said Campbell. "We're certainly going to give it a real hard try."

The Arkansas Medical Marijuana Act would allow doctors to prescribe medical marijuana to patients with a "debilitating medical condition" to relieve severe pain.
