News Summary

The Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau, a division of the U.S. Treasury Department, has announced interim standards for the advertising and labeling of the terms "low carbohydrate" for alcoholic beverages, Reuters reported April 9.

According to the standards, an alcoholic beverage must have less than 7 grams of carbohydrates to be labeled or advertised as low-carb. If an alcoholic drink contains more than 7 grams of carbohydrates but less than the regular version, it can be labeled "reduced" or "lower" carbohydrates.

The new standards also prohibit alcohol companies from claiming that their low-carbohydrate alcoholic drinks are healthy for dieters.

The Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau said permanent standards would be established in the near future.
