Texas Has Most DWIs in Nation August 26, 2004
News Summary
National statistics show that Texas leads the country in DWIs and has the highest number of alcohol-related crashes. Because of its high DWI rate, Texas was among 14 states that received federal funding for a Labor Day drunken-driving awareness campaign, the San Antonio Express-News reported Aug. 24."If we catch you, I guarantee, you're going to jail," said Texas Department of Public Safety Trooper Travis Hall. "If you're going to drink, just don't drive."
Law-enforcement officials released the figures to coincide with the kickoff of the nationwide campaign called "Drink, Drive, Go to Jail." The effort is designed to reduce the number of drunk-driving fatalities and injuries that occur during the Labor Day weekend.
The crackdown will include 60,000 additional officers on the road nationally and an aggressive media campaign to discourage people from driving after drinking.
Michelle Price, executive director of the South Texas Injury Prevention and Research Center, said an estimated 545 people will be killed in a drunken-driving crash this Labor Day weekend.
