News Summary

Darlene Veltri, a former United Parcel Service (UPS) worker at the company's Laurel Mountain facility in Pennsylvania, is suing the company for firing her because she is a recovering addict who uses prescription medications, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported Aug. 10.

The lawsuit filed in federal court seeks class-action status for other recovering addicts who take prescription drugs, such as Xanax, for anxiety and depression.

The lawsuit contends that UPS singles out employees with a history of addiction and forces them into disclosing the prescription medications they take. The company, the lawsuit claims, decides which medications are inappropriate for someone in recovery and fires anyone who refuses to stop taking the prescription drugs.
