News Summary

Following the death of a freshman from alcohol poisoning two months ago, the University of Oklahoma has announced new alcohol policies that completely ban drinking in the school's frat houses and residence halls, the Associated Press reported Dec. 2.

In addition, the university will improve its hotline for students to report drinking violations and expand its alcohol-education programs.

The new rules will take effect Jan. 18, at the start of the new semester.

According to University of Oklahoma President David Boren, students with three alcohol violations will now be suspended for one semester.

"These policies send a strong signal that alcohol abuse will not be tolerated at the University of Oklahoma," Boren said.

On Sept. 30, 19-year-old Blake Hammontree died after a Sigma Chi fraternity party. He had a blood-alcohol content that was more than five times the legal limit.

To ensure that fraternities and residence halls are complying with the ban, Boren said that university staff members would make unannounced inspections.
