N.Y. Targets Public Housing Drug Offenders June 28, 2004
News Summary
New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced a crackdown on drug dealers who live in or visit public-housing projects in the city, the New York Times reported June 25.Under the plan, individuals who have been arrested for the sale of drugs on public-housing grounds would be banned from all public housing outside of their home and from common areas in the building they live in. Those not living in the public-housing development would be prohibited from returning.
According to Bloomberg, police would maintain a database of everyone arrested for selling drugs in public-housing complexes. Trespassing notices would become void for those acquitted of their charges. Those in violation of the notices would be arrested.
"Public housing still suffers in this city from gun violence and sex crimes, and a lot of it comes from drug dealers. And I think for too long we've been unwilling to address the issue, and I'm determined to address it and do something about it," said Bloomberg.
City statistics show that 11 percent of the city's murders and rapes, and 16 percent of the shootings last year were committed on Housing Authority property.
