News Summary

A measure to legalize marijuana for medical purposes appears to be on its way to passage in Montana. With 91 of 881 precincts reporting, voters were approving the measure by a 65 percent to 35 percent margin, the Associated Press reported Nov. 2.

Under Initiative 148, it would become legal in Montana to cultivate, possess, and use marijuana in limited quantities for medical purposes. The measure also protects patients, their doctors, and caregivers from arrest and prosecution.

"I'm really thankful to Montana," said Paul Befumo of Missoula, one of the leaders of the medical-marijuana campaign. "I think we did something good for ourselves, our neighbors and relatives who are sick."
