News Summary

Montana lawmakers have proposed hiring a new cabinet-level state drug czar to coordinate drug treatment and prevention programs, the Billings Gazette reported Aug. 28.

"Methamphetamine abuse is becoming a widespread problem in Montana," said Rep. Don Roberts (R-Billings). "There should be some coordinated effort."

The new drug czar would be responsible for identifying all state and federal resources available to combat Montana's drug problems, especially methamphetamine.

The drug czar would be appointed by the governor. Supporters hope to have the position filled by next October.
