News Summary

As of July 2, Hawaii will have two new laws to help officials address the growing problem of methamphetamine addiction, the Associated Press reported July 1.

One law directs first-time, nonviolent drug offenders to treatment instead of jail. The measure also directs health insurers to pay for drug treatment, and provides $14.7 million for a public-private coordination of drug prevention and education.

Another law establishes the Hawaii R-x Plus prescription-drug discount program for families in Hawaii whose annual income is within 3.5 times the federal poverty level.
