Drug Policy Group Appeals to Republicans August 25, 2004
News Summary
The Drug Policy Alliance plans to use the upcoming Republican national convention in New York City as a platform to showcase GOP leaders who support drug-policy reform, the New York Times reported Aug. 23.The group has been raising money to run ads in the New York Sun that welcome the Republican delegates and include remarks made by California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and other prominent Republicans, including George Shultz and Milton Friedman, that support changes in the drug law.
"I think there were a few people who were a little weirded out that we were making this kind of pitch and welcoming the Republicans," said Ethan Nadelmann, executive director of the Drug Policy Alliance. "But there are many other people who think we'll get a major breakthrough on drugs by a 'Nixon goes to China' initiative from a Republican."
