News Summary

Peter Coors, scion of the Coors Brewing Company in Colorado, has beaten a former congressman to win the Republican state primary for an open Senate seat, the Associated Press reported Aug. 10.

With 85 percent of the precincts reporting, Coors had 61 percent of the votes and former Rep. Bob Schaffer had 39 percent.

Coors' victory ends a bitter campaign in which Schaffer supporters funded ads that mocked Coors' support for lowering the drinking age.

Coors will now face Democratic Attorney General Ken Salazar in the November election. Salazar won the Democratic primary race against Mike Miles, with 73 percent of the votes.

Political experts predict that the race between Coors and Salazar could be one of the most expensive in Colorado history. The two parties are expected to spend an estimated $6 million each to try to win the seat left by retiring Republican Sen. Ben Nighthorse Campbell.
