News Summary

While most colleges offer some form of an addiction prevention program, a growing number of schools are developing on-campus recovery programs, including housing specifically for students in recovery, Time magazine reported Sept. 20.

A new residential program at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio, is called Recovery House. The on-campus housing is designed to help students in various stages of recovery to remain alcohol and drug-free.

Jes Sellers, director of Case's university counseling service, said Recovery House was created in response to the growing number of students evaluated for addiction to alcohol and other drug use. According to Sellers, the number of students with problems identified through screening increased 69 percent, from 29 students in the 2000-2001 school year to 49 last year, an all-time high.

"These students need a safe place to live where threats to sobriety can be balanced by the collective strengths of a community in recovery," he said.
