Coalition Raises Awareness of Alcohol Impaired Driving March 30, 2004
News Summary
A coalition created by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) aims to raise awareness about alcohol-impaired driving and the need for more physician intervention.Called Our United Response to Preventing Alcohol Related Tragedies (O.U.R. P.A.R.T.) coalition, the effort is led by physicians, nurses and EMS workers in the Southeast. "We believe the coalition will be a highly effective way to disseminate key messages around impaired driving in order to modify driver behavior and increase physician-screening practices," said William Kootsikas, acting regional administrator for NHTSA Region IV.
NHTSA and O.U.R. P.A.R.T. have set a goal to reduce annual alcohol-impaired accident fatalities to .53 per 100 million vehicle miles traveled by the end of 2004.
"Engaging both highly visible and community-focused medical leaders will not only allow us to raise the public's understanding of this deadly epidemic and the need for individual and physician intervention, but also will help us intervene directly in communities and locations that are particularly susceptible to high incidents of alcohol-impaired driving," said Kootsikas.
