News Summary

A survey of students in California indicates that steroid use, which has been making headlines in professional sports, may be common in high school, too, Fox News reported April 30.

"The problem in California schools and probably schools around the country is much larger than we think," said California state Sen. Jackie Speier (D-San Mateo).

In a survey of 500 students across the state, researchers found that 11 percent of boys and 5 percent of girls used performance-enhancing drugs. As a result of the findings, Speier has introduced a bill that would mandate testing of all high-school athletes for steroid use.

Those opposed to testing say it's too expensive in a state facing financial problems. Others, like the American Civil Liberties Union, argue that drug testing is a violation of privacy rights.
