British Brewer Warns on Binge Drinking October 20, 2004
News Summary
Britain's brewery giant Scottish & Newcastle is addressing binge drinking by voluntarily placing health warnings on its beer bottles, the Guardian reported Oct. 18.The warnings will appear on the brewer's Kronenbourg and Foster brands next month, and on its other brands in the next few months. A spokeswoman for the company said the warning is designed as "a responsible-drinking message. The intent is to educate people about their intake."
Coors, maker of Britain's best-selling lager, Carling, is taking a similar approach by including a responsible-drinking message on its Carling cans in the next few weeks.
While applauding the efforts of the beer companies to curb binge drinking in Britain, Rosie Brocklehurst from Addaction, a national alcohol and drug treatment advocacy group, said the alcohol industry should do more to address alcohol misuse.
"Some big players have been guilty of irresponsible marketing, and of developing alcopops, making vast profits from these tactics, and fanned the binge-drinking culture in the process," said Brocklehurst.
